An Appalachian Summer by Ann H. Gabhart

53110086

ABOUT THE BOOK

In 1933, most people are focused on the Great Depression but all Piper Danson can think about is how to get out of being a debutante and marrying Braxton Crandall. In an act of defiance, Piper volunteers as a frontier nursing courier in the Appalachian Mountains where adventure awaits.

MY REVIEW

Mrs. Gabhart once again brings us a delightful read about 1930's Kentucky.
I have enjoyed reading her books and this one is no exception!
This is a subject that I feel this author has done well with and her research is spot on!
I've found myself looking up Mrs. Breckenridge and I"m thoroughly intrigued by her and how she started everything. She's a fascinating woman that's for sure!
I love her saying that can't is not a word in her book. I think it was wonderful how she stood by it. By saying can't isn't going to get anything done.
I feel like if it's meant to be then God will make it happen no matter where, when, and who you are. I like how He's always watching out for us. I know He has me. All the time.
Kentucky is full of rich history and I really liked the story telling of the mountain folks. They can teach future generations to keep the old ways. I think in some ways we'd be better of if the old ways were still around.
I will say this, the horses in this story made my day. They are my favorite animals and the way Gabhart has written I felt like I was riding with the nurses to their destinations to help the people that live in the mountains of Kentucky.
I snickered in some places of this book and I really and truly loved this read! It took me back to my home even if only for a little while.
I love learning and reading more the nurses of the Appalachian mountains and their whole reason for being there.
Truda is my favorite character in the whole book. Her whole outlook on life is amazing! She keeps on doing what needs to be done and I like that her positive attitude rubs off on everyone that she meets including her niece Piper.
Garhart weaves in some wonderful faith filled messages that aren't a mile long and brings her point across without being too preachy. It's my favorite thing about reading these books.
I am looking forward to Gabhart's next book with anticipation because she's an awesome story teller herself.
I highly recommend this book. It will leave your heart filled with satisfaction from an incredible read.
My thanks to Netgalley and Revell for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own.

Stories that Bind by Susie Finkbeiner

Stories That Bind Us

ABOUT THE BOOK

Betty Sweet is still recovering from the loss of her husband when she becomes the temporary guardian of a five-year-old nephew she never knew she had. As they struggle to move forward, they build a relationship upon the foundation of storytelling and its special kind of magic.

MY REVIEW

Wow! I was certainly sad to see this book end! But then again, good books usually are over before you know it. I love Susie Finkbeiner. I like how she makes me stop and think about each quote whenever I came across one. I really liked this one because it is fitting for the the 60's at a time when things were scary in an ever changing world.
" Don't let the scary things of the world keep you from seeing the good." "Even the darkest night can't put out all the light." I really think that this advice from Betty to Hugo applies even in today's world. Not just the 60's. I like how Betty reminds herself while she's telling Hugo this. Even adults need gentle reminders too.
I remember sitting in church listening to Preacher Joe preaching this very thing. As long as there's light there will be hope. I think that's why this particular quote stood out to me. God is always a beacon of light. He's there for us all the time.
Fear can often make people do things they normally wouldn't do.
Another quote was a lady talking to Betty when she was visiting Clara told her that all we can do is love them if we can't do anything else. We love them because they are still family. How true this is!
I couldn't put this book down because every time I did it would holler at me to pick right back up until I finished it. I love when books yell at me like that. It means they're fabulous!!
Hugo stole my heart from the beginning and at times made me cry.
Betty was a fabulous character too who had a big heart of gold. For what she done for Hugo. I wish she was my aunt. My the stories that she told! I had to laugh at a few of them.
The places that the author described I have actually been there. But I didn't mind visiting again. I rather enjoyed it! Michigan is my favorite place to visit.
I really liked the actual historical events that took place in real life and I feel that the author has done her research to the T. She's done an excellent job in bringing them to life so that we can imagine being there ourselves.
Finkbeiner write the best stories ever! This book definitely comes from the heart! I hope this isn't her last.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! It certainly deserves it. I would reread this book over and over because it's just that good!
Friends you just have to read this heartwarming tale of an era gone by! So so good!
I highly recommend!
My thanks to Netgalley and Revell for a beautiful read! One I highly enjoyed!
I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own. NO compensations were received.

MY REVIEW

Love loved this book!
Cool characters and an awesome plot! I also loved the theme of love, acceptance and forgiveness.
I'm giving this book 5 stars because I've had such an enjoyable read out of this.
It made for a peaceful evening when everyone else was asleep. I got to visit my Amish world once again.
In my opinion, this story is also about hope. No matter what a person has done or what has happened to them.
Lucas and Esther are perfect examples. Each is trying to get through life the best way they know how. Grief has no time limit that's for sure! I still miss my mom!
And you know, secrets do have a way of coming out in the end sometimes depending on how it's received it may give that person some peace after it's out.
Might I say this cover is gorgeous! Makes you wonder what Esther is thinking about doesn't it? You'll just have to read this book to find out.
I highly recommend this beautiful story! And I will be watching for more stories by the author in the future!
My thanks to Netgalley for a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. I was NOT required to write a positive review.

The Crushing Depths by Dani Pettrey

53163130

ABOUT THE BOOK

They know the power and peril of the ocean.
But as they get closer to the deadly truth . . .
An even greater danger lurks just beneath the surface.

When an accident claims the life of an oil-rig worker, Coast Guard Investigators Rissi Dawson and Mason Rogers are flown to the scene thirty-eight miles from shore. Tensions aboard the rig are high, and the death has everyone on edge. Environmental activists are threatening to do whatever it takes to stop the "plague on the environment" from continuing its work. Meanwhile, rumors are circulating on board about an ancient curse lurking in the depths below.

Mounting evidence shows the death might not have been an accident. Was the man killed by one of the activists or, more frighteningly, a member of his own crew? Rissi and Mason have to sort through not only numerous suspects, but also their own haunted pasts and their attraction to each other.

Just as the case seems about to break open, worse news arrives: a tropical storm has turned their way. Now they're cut off from any rescue--right where the killer wants them.

MY REVIEW

Another great read by Dani Pettrey and the second book in this new series!
A wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon following Rissi and Mason as they solve their case on an oil rig along with different complications getting their way!
I loved guessing whodunit in this book! It's not who you think it is at first!
There were different places in this book that will make you laugh and if not at least grinning at the team member's gentle banter throughout the book. It's what I liked best about this book.
Pettrey has a way of keeping you on the edge of your seat to see what Rissi and Mason and the other team members will do next!
Another thing I liked was how Pettrey has indeed done her research for the investigation part of this book so we'll that she's made it so believable and real like you were a part of the team yourself! This book was fantastic!
I'm looking forward to the next book in this series because this sure did not disappoint! I highly recommend this great read! You'll not be disappointed!
My thanks to Netgalley and Bethany House for a copy of the book. I was NOT required to write a positive review for this book.

MY REVIEW

When you pick up a Robin Lee Hatcher book you know it's going to be good!
When I finished reading Ben and Ashley's story, I thought that was the end so I was pleasantly surprised to see this one.
Hatcher has done a nice job in tying the past with the present together once again.
I think what fascinated me the most about this book was that Andrew and Helen were able to live to see all of these historical events! How wonderful would it have been to see things like that! Imagine how many generations can live in one house too! I love historical homes.
In the present we really don't see much changing because in my opinion it's already happened. I think that's why I'd love to travel back in time to see all of these wonderful events and maybe just maybe get to meet Neil Armstrong.
While reading Andrew and Helen's part of the story I felt like I re-learned a few medical terminology that I had forgotten about.
Andrew is my favorite character so I was glad to see him return in this novel. I liked him because he was strong in his faith even when things in his life were going wrong he turned to the Lord for his needs. I know that had to have been hard to do because it is for me. I'm trying to do better. I've even been trying to keep a daily journel.
Jeb was another story altogether. So much anger and hatred! Wow! I felt that coming through the pages of the book!
They say that Jeb's a handsome man but looks really aren't everything. In my opinion, it's what is in the heart is what really counts and of course it's what God really looks at too.
But, you know I really ended up liking him. I'm not going to say why because I don't want to give the story away!
Holly was a sweet lady. Poor thing really struggled!
In different circumstances there were times when I wanted to sit and cry or just give up but of course I didn't.
As you read this book my hope is that you'll see what this references to. I figured it out right away where this was going but again Hatcher has done such an amazing job.that she'll make you think twice. She did me.
I finished this book last night. I finished it 4 am in the morning. I just didn't want to put it down..
I wanted to see if Jeb could work out his problems with his brother. I found myself rooting for them.
This is the third book in the series and I think, think it's the last. But, we'll see.
Also, there are some Bible verses that written throughout this book and I actually looked up a couple and a few I had memorized from going to church myself.
Bibles are special. They are God's word and I especially liked this one because each family member that received it treasured it always.
I know I did mine! I have my grandpa's and there are a bunch of names that are written in there. I like that.
Anyway, I highly recommend this book because you'll not want to put it down until you finish. This book will leave you feeling full and satisfied after a good read. Kind of like a wonderful dessert
My thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson publishing for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are mine.

Don't Keep Silent by Elizabeth Goddard

53125343

ABOUT THE BOOK

Justice comes easy for these two. But forgiveness? That's another matter altogether.

Investigative reporter Rae Burke will do anything to find her missing sister-in-law, even if it means facing Liam McKade, a man who almost lost his life saving hers. A former DEA agent, Liam thought he could find peace at his Wyoming ranch, but he doesn't feel at home anywhere anymore. When the reporter who blew his cover on an important investigation inserts herself back into his life, he's less than thrilled. But Rae's keen investigative skills have led her down the right path--and directly into the dragon's mouth--leaving Liam no choice but to protect her.

As the danger increases, the past they both tried to flee catches up to them, along with the feelings they once had for each other

MY REVIEW

I so enjoyed this story!
I love how Elizabeth Goddard weaves mystery into her books to keep you on the edge of your seat. Her style of writing is fantastic while at the same time the characters seem realistic and believable. ( It's what I love about her books).
Lots of twists and turns throughout the book and some of these I didn't see coming! I love guessing at the whodunit scenarios.
The supporting characters weren't well liked but that's to be expected. To me, it's what made the story so awesome!
I enjoyed Liam and Rae's story so much and I was glad to see Austin and Heath back too if only for a short while.
I really enjoyed the plot. It was interesting to see how the investigators go about their searches for missing people although some of it did send some shivers down my back. That's my favorite part of the book is learning what they do and how they do it.
I've watched a lot of shows like this but I think I'd rather read about it.
Indeed money is the root of all evil. Always has been, I think it's in how people use it.
Liam and Rae certainly have a lot to overcome but I was rooting for them through the entire story. I think that if things were meant to be God would certainly orchestrate it wouldn't He? I like to think so.
I've really enjoyed this series and I hope there's more to come. I hate saying goodbye for now.
But, I will say this this book is certainly worth the reread. I loved every minute of it and it kept me from facing whatever is going on with me right now.
I wish that I could give this book more than 5 stars because wow it was just amazing!
I highly recommend this book for everyone!

Set the Stars Alight by Amanda Dykes

53141215. sx318 sy475

ABOUT THE BOOK

Lucy Clairmont's family treasured the magic of the past, and her childhood fascination with stories of the high seas led her to become a marine archaeologist. But when tragedy strikes, it's Dashel, an American forensic astronomer, and his knowledge of the stars that may help her unearth the truth behind the puzzle she's discovered in her family home.

Two hundred years earlier, the seeds of love are sown between a boy and a girl who spend their days playing in a secret sea cave, while the privileged young son of the estate looks on, wishing to join. As the children grow and war leads to unthinkable heartbreak, a story of love, betrayal, sacrifice, and redemption unfolds, held secret by the passage of time.

As Lucy and Dash journey to a mysterious old estate on the East Sussex coast, their search leads them to a community of souls and a long-hidden tale that may hold the answers--and the healing--they so desperately seek.

MY REVIEW

I enjoyed this time slip novel from present to past with awesome characters and a wonderful plot.
Dykes sure knows how to draw her readers in from the beginning until the end.
Her writing is very beautiful!
I think what I really liked about this book was how the generations of Lucy's family was woven in to be believable and realistic.
A very entertaining story that will make you want to keep turning the pages of this book until you are finished.
I didn't want the book to end it was so good!
I especially loved how the author had woven the story of the HMS Jubilee in as I love ships!
Astronomy has always interested me too so that's why this story has captivated me so much!
And this is a book that will leave you thinking about Lucy and her family long after their story is over.
I really loved this quote " To Remember the God who is coming and coming and coming to find your heart" he'd said. Wherever you are, whatever's happened. With every miracle that around every ordinary corner. It did not feel like he was riddling them, only continuing his nightly stories.
I believe what he's telling Lucy is that God knows what is inside her heart all the time and that he's coming again.

MY REVIEW

Feeling that this book comes from the author’s heart it has turned out to be her best one yet!
Wade gives us a little bit of everything in this book along with some life’s lessons
and she doesn’t beat around the bush about it.
Writing about
I won’t say what they are since I don’t want to give anything away.
Genevive is just like any other human being. She is just trying to get through life the best way she knew how what with everything going on in it and all.
I think life is stressful at times but it can also be what you make of it. In my opinion Genevive took it a little too far.
For this reason I really couldn’t warm up to her at all.
Sam is an amazing character! At first he got on my nerves but as I read on I grew to love him. I thought that he was perfect for a certain someone.
I enjoy Becky‘s writing to the fullest. I love walking away with my heart feeling full and satisfied. Wade has a way of doing that to you.
The cover of this book is certainly beautiful!

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Becky Wade

During her childhood in California, Becky frequently produced homemade plays starring her sisters, friends, and cousins. These plays almost always featured a heroine, a prince, and a love story with a happy ending. She's been a fan of all things romantic ever since.

Becky and her husband lived overseas in the Caribbean and Australia before settling in Dallas, Texas. It was during her years abroad that Becky's passion for reading turned into a passion for writing. She published three historical romances with Avon Books, then put her career on hold for several years to care for her three kids, then recently returned to writing sheerly for the love of it. She felt led to move to the genre of contemporary Christian romance and couldn’t be more thrilled with it.

These days Becky can be found failing but trying to keep up with her housework, sweating at the gym, carting her kids around town, playing tennis, hunched over her computer, eating chocolate, or collapsed on the sofa watching TV with her husband.

What Momma Left Behind by Cindy Sproles

53154863

ABOUT THE BOOK

Worie Dressar is seventeen years old when influenza and dysentery ravage her Appalachian Mountain community in 1898, leaving behind a growing number of orphaned children with no way to care for themselves. Worie's mother has been secretly feeding a number of these little ones on Sourwood Mountain. But when she dies suddenly, Worie is left to figure out why and how she was caring for them.

Plagued with two good-for-nothing brothers--one greedy and the other a drunkard--Worie fights to save her home and the orphaned children now in her begrudging care. Along the way, she will discover the beauty of unconditional love and the power of forgiveness as she cares for all of Momma's children.

MY REVIEW

A very enjoyable read by Cindy Sproles who wrote so well that I thought I was in the novel with Worie Dressar.
Worie impressed me so much! She’s one strong and determined young lady who does what needs to be done in order to survive in 1877 Appalachia’s.
Along the way she learns some valuable life lessons like forgiveness and love as she helps the needy children who lost their loved ones.
The language of the mountain people is beautiful. Sort of reminds me of Kentucky.
The one person that I didn’t like was shifty Calvin. I felt that he should have stayed around to help Worie. To me, it didn’t matter about his upbringing. He still should have stepped up to be a man. He made me mad at him.
This story will tug at your heart as you read Worie’s story. It did me. I will be looking for more of Cindy’s work in the future.
I appreciate that Sproles doesn’t beat around the bush about the hard times and tough subjects that are in this book.
She will make you smile and cry at the same time.
This book will keep you turning its pages until you are finished and will leave you thinking about Worie and her family long after this story is finished.
I highly recommend it!
My thanks to NetGalley for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions are my ownA very enjoyable read by Cindy Sproles who wrote so well that I thought I was in the novel with Worie Dressar.

MY REVIEW

I loved this novel!
A new to me author that I immediately liked and since I'm already fond of the Amish this story touched my heart deeply.
I could relate to some of it because my parents were foster parents for many years. A thing that I was jealous of for many years. Now, that I am grown I look back and see that my parents were totally selfless.  That's a true gift.
These characters will melt your heart. You'll want to laugh and cry with them in their joyous moments and in their sad one too.
A subject that Grochowski did really well with and is rarely talked about among the Amish is autism.
This story gave me a somewhat idea of what parents go through and deal with all the time. The Amish aren't exempt from the things we are.
I liked that this story will keep you spellbound until the end. You'll not want to put it down until you see what happens with our friends.
I haven't enjoyed a book like this in a long time!

Amy spent her childhood in Melbourne, Australia, where her parents worked as church planters. After returning to the States, the Blue Ridge Mountains of Southwest Virginia became home. Her real-life romance began on a travel nursing assignment to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she met her husband, David.

After a nursing career of more than twenty years, Amy is now fulfilling her long-awaited dream career as an author of inspirational romance. She is also a full-time homeschool mom for her two boys, one of whom has Autism Spectrum Disorder, and lives with her family in the bustling foothills of North Carolina.

MY REVIEW

This Amish book was a bit different from what I normally read but that's ok because I still enjoyed the characters and the plot.
A page turner to be sure that will keep your interest until the book was finished. It will also keep you guessing as to who the culprit is.
I think Celine and Sophie were magnificent throughout the story and they quickly became my favorites.
Aiden was ok too. Actually, I'll take him too.
In a way, I was sad that Levi didn't get much of a storyline. I love the Amish. Their simple ways of life fascinates me. I thought him an interesting character and I wish I could have gotten to know him more.
Poor Levi!!
I've read this author before and she's quite good with her storytelling. So when I seen this book I very much wanted to read it. I wasn't disappointed at all!
This is the 8th installment by this author which means I'll have to play catch-up.
I highly recommend this book!
My thanks to Just Reads Tours for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review and all opinions are my own!
